“The best news in the not-entirely-cheerful year of 2016, architecturally speaking, is that the finest new housing is being built by local authorities. Projects such as Alison Brooks’s Ely Court for the London borough of Brent, or similar works in the boroughs of Camden, Hackney and elsewhere, are showing that council homes do not have be the grim monoliths of legend. They are well considered and humanly scaled, with hospitable shared spaces, balconies you might actually want to sit on and other small but significant details. As central government is showing glimmers of realisation that volume housebuilders cannot meet the country’s needs alone, developments like these are part of the answer.“

Alison Brooks on RIAI Gold Medal jury
Alison Brooks will be on next year’s Gold Medal jury for The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland. This is the premier award for architecture in Ireland, which is awarded for a building completed within a defined three year period.
Alison Brooks will be on next year’s Gold Medal jury for The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland. This is the premier award for architecture in Ireland, which is awarded for a building completed within a defined three year period.
Brooks will serve alongside Louise Cotter, Michael McGarry (Chair), Michael Pike, Roisin Heneghan, Seán O’Laoire, Simon Wall and Tom Maher.

Alison Brooks said: ‘The programme celebrates the achievements of women in the profession while reminding us that we can all change the status quo’. Alison won the AJ Women Architect of the Year Award in 2013, when the Women In Architecture Campaign was in its second year.
The 2017 award winners were announced on March 3rd at a ceremony and luncheon held at Claridge’s in London, read all about it here.

Alison Brooks will speak at the national conference of the New Zealand Institute of Architects 2017. It runs from 9–11 February 2017 in Auckland.
Alison Brooks will speak at the national conference of the New Zealand Institute of Architects 2017. It runs from 9–11 February 2017 in Auckland.
Other speakers include David Adjaye, Mauricio Pezo & Sofia von Ellrichshausen, Benedetta Tagliabue, Ian McDougall, Barbara Bestor, Todd Saunders, Hua Li, John Wardle and Christopher Hawthorne. Alison will speak on Thursday 9th February at 10.45am (GMT+13) and will host an informal breakfast at 8am (GMT+13) on Friday 10th February.
The theme, in:situ, is about architecture and the contexts in which it occurs – physical and intellectual, geographical and typological, social and historical. It has a wide focus on the forces and circumstances that influence architects’ work and their careers. The conference speakers traverse much of the contemporary architectural terrain. They work on a wide range of projects of varying scales in very different places, and have built diverse and accomplished careers. In doing so they have responded to the changing nature of practice and proved the continuing relevance and importance of the role of the architect. Alison will speak about ABA projects Ely Court, The Smile and Exeter College Cohen Quad, University of Oxford.
