Central Milton Keynes Buckinghamshire

ABA was part of a competition-winning team for this English Partnership competition for the dense location of Milton Keynes city centre. The team included other two leading architectural practices; HTA and Rick Mather Architects. The project was a mixed use, 900-unit scheme: “West End One,” located in the centre of Milton Keynes. Each architect was responsible for 300 units across the masterplan of high density garden apartments.

The project was seen as a continuation of Milton Keynes Garden City ideals translated into a more sustainable and higher density model for contemporary urban life. A high-density perimeter of stone-clad buildings with mixed-use units along primary streets formed a protective armature for the new quarter. Deeper into the site, ABA’s more informal, timber-clad perimeter block encloses the internal garden square.

ABA’s faceted perimeter buildings frame the south and west facing internal streets, expanding and contracting the space of the street to form distinct urban ‘places’. Within this protected ring of urban places is a 100% timber framed courtyard block providing a green sanctuary at the heart of the scheme.
